Family of Four Murdered in FL, May be Linked to Mexican Drug War. Plus, 1,000 Dead People No One Cares About.
In 2006, a man, wife, and their two sons, age four and three, were gunned down on a dark stretch of Florida’s Turnpike. Two men were charged with the murder, and pled not guilty. They face the death penalty. In closing arguments, the defense attorney says the killing was connected to a $187,000 drug debt to a Mexican cartel. The family had recently moved from Texas to Florida reportedly to dodge the debt. A ledger found in the family’s belongings outlining the money owed was for cocaine. The defense attorney notes the lack of physical evidence against his clients. However the same ledger that outlined the debt to the cartel, also mentioned a debt to the accused. In the United States, the death of a family of four, including two kids so young, remains news even over two years after the incident, as it makes its way through court.

Not so easy to find is, so far in 2009 over 1,000 people have been slain in
Mexico as a direct result of the war on drugs. That is a huge number only two months into the year, but it is on pace to fall short of last year’s death toll. Maybe 1,000 dead people just isn’t a big deal anymore…
